It is common knowledge that Italy produces high-quality wines, and these wines are usually classified based on the region or province they are produced in. High-quality wines in Italy are controlled and regulated by law, this is to guarantee those specific requirements are respected to produce a variety of wines.
IGT – Indicazione Geografica Tipica (Typical Geographic Indication) is one of the official classifications of wines adopted in Italy and regulated by European laws. In other words, an IGT wine is a typical local wine from a specific area. The typical geographical indication refers first of all to the region in which the wine is produced; often they are pretty large areas but delimited by regional boundaries. In the IGT label, in addition to the exact location, the color of the wine must be indicated, which vines have been used, and possibly also the vintage.
This type of wine is a superb product distinguished by texture, flavor, and aroma, from other common wines. Many wines are included in the IGT list, taking into consideration that Italy produces wine in almost every region thanks to the richness of its soil and the perfect weather conditions.
Tuscany is a region consisting of the sea, mountains with an inland hilly area, from a climactic point of view, is optimal for the cultivation of vines, whose first traces date back to the Etruscans.
This region’s native vines such as Sangiovese, Canaiolo Nero, Mammolo, Colorino, Trebbiano Toscano, Malvasia, Ansonica, Aleatico, Vermentino combined with vines from other areas such as Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Gamay, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon have given life to magnificent white wines, sparkling rose wines and passito wines.
IGT Toscana’s wines can be red in various shades of violet or ruby red. Rosato or Rosè in a bright rosy color, depending on the grapes used during the production. This type of wine can be sparkling or still. White wine can also be sparkling or still, in light and soft shades of yellow, depending also on the grapes used for production. Vino Passito (or dessert wine) is made from mature dry grapes and it is commonly consumed as a dessert after meals. It has a dark golden color when it is produced from white grapes and tends to brown
in wines made from red grapes.
The denomination Toscano or IGT Toscana (Typical Tuscan Geographical Indication) was created in 1995 and is one of the most important wine areas of the Tuscany region. Wines with this type of indication are produced from grapes cultivated in the Tuscany Region, from varieties allowed into the list of cultivable varieties. Toscana IGT wines are mainly based on the provinces of Florence, Arezzo, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, Siena.
